The gender domain of physician health, well-being and career ambitions


Funded by the Swiss Society of General Internal Medicine Foundation, I built a survey of 100 questions on demographics, personal characteristics, and measures of workplace environment and discrimination. Nearly 1000 individuals participated. Our work on the leaky pipeline towards leadership, family planning and health topics has been presented at national and international scientific conferences, led to the supervision of 1 ongoing and 5 completed ongoing Master theses or Medical Doctorats, and so far 5 preprints and submitted manuscripts.

Below an overview of personal and workplace-related factors linked to higher career ambitions.

Several work-related factors, including negative views on parenthood by supervisors and gender discrimination are linked to diminished career ambitions among women in General Internal Medicine, whereas such trends are not observed in male physicians.
